Tonight, a new report has connected the Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets in a potential trade centered around Cole Perfetti.
The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to be in an interesting spot building for the future but hoping to contend now.
After this season, the Penguins will need to pick a direction with Evgeni Malkin's contract expiring and young talent coming in the pipeline.
If the Penguins wish to remain a competitive team in the East but get younger down the middle one source has suggested the team target Winnipeg Jets young star Cole Perfetti.
Pittsburgh Penguins linked to Winnipeg Jets young star Cole Perfetti
In a new piece for The Hockey News, NHL analyst has urged the Penguins to target Perfetti after his name was listed in recent trade chatter.
Perfetti was recently mentioned as a potential trade candidate to watch during the off-season by Bleacher Report's Adam Gretz. If the Jets do end up making Perfetti available, the Penguins should consider making a push for him.
Perfetti, 24, is only on pace for 34 points this season but in past seasons has been a key contributor in Winnipeg.
His similar style to that of Penguins rookie Ben Kindel suggests that he would be a great fit in Pittsburgh and could take a major step forward under head coach Dan Muse.
It remains unclear whether or not Kyle Dubas would covet Perfetti he is made available but his addition to the lineup would allow for a lot more flexibility in the lineup whether or not Malkin comes back.
