Greg Wyshynski says Jack Hughes will not get his Olympic golden-goal puck, and that stings harder because the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto keeps the last image.
Hughes scored the overtime winner in Team USA's 2-1 gold-medal win over Canada on February 22. He owns the goal, but not the artifact.
That distinction is the whole story.
The Hall's case is simple. IIHF officials secured the puck, and the Hall says the display preserves one of hockey's biggest Olympic moments for the public.
Hughes' case is simple too.
He scored it, lived it, and wants it back for a family collection that already tracks the Hughes brothers through the sport's biggest stages.
You can almost see the exact moment that celebration turns into a custody fight.
"Unfortunately, in the easiest words, it was never Jack's puck to own."

For a Canada-facing audience, this is where the edge lives. Team Canada lost the gold-medal game, but Toronto kept the permanent exhibit, and that is not nothing.
Jack Hughes leaves Canada the lasting symbol
That is the kind of detail fans here will not forget.
Hughes is still New Jersey's biggest offensive driver when healthy, with 17-34-51 in 46 games, and the Devils enter March 18 at 34-31-2. This is not old business. It is active-star business.
That matters for the read.
A soft feature just says Hughes is upset. The sharper read is that hockey power still lives in who controls the memory, who frames the moment, and where the sport sends fans to look at history.
Canada lost the game. Canada still got the museum ending.
