NHL analyst Max Bultman of The Athletic recently spoke about the Detroit Red Wings pursuit of Kyle Connor and pleaded for the team to make a move immediately. Kyle Connor is heading into the final year of his current contract with the Winnipeg Jets and to this point extension talks have been minimal. After losing Nikolaj Ehlers in free agency to the Carolina Hurricanes many analysts and insiders believe Connor could also test free agency.

Loading from Twitter ...

Earlier this month, the Red Wings were mentioned as a team that could target Connor if he makes it to free agency. However, Bultman believes the Red Wings cannot afford to wait that long and need to make an immediate move for Connor before the season begins.
NHL Analyst Urges The Red Wings To Snag Kyle Connor Before It Is Too Late
In his recent piece for The Athletic, Bultman mentioned the recent trend of players being off the market before free agency officially opens. This season alone players like Brock Boeser, Mitch Marner, and others all went off the board just hours before free agency. Bultman believes the Red Wings need to pull the trigger on a trade to avoid this situation with Connor if they truly covet him. After the way this past free-agent class played out, can they really afford to wait? Virtually none of the top players in the class even made it to July 1 last year. Who knows if that will repeat to the same degree. Or if players will eventually decide to really test what the open market could offer them, but if I'm the Red Wings, I'm probably not looking to wait and find out. Bultman also mentions Brad Marchand and Mikko Rantanen as cautionary tales of waiting too long to make a move. I think the Red Wings would need to jump the line, even with him being a hometown kid. You just can't take the chance he gets traded somewhere else and likes it enough to stay, as happened with Brad Marchand and Mikko Rantanen this past season, and Noah Hanifin before that. As of now, Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Winnipeg Jets are in no hurry to trade Connor but if the Red Wings are willing to give up a king's ransom it is a possibility the front office must consider. As the season approached we will continue to provide all the latest updates on Kyle Connor's future with the Winnipeg Jets.
