Jets' Mark Scheifele became the leader for most games played in the team's franchise history, and after the game, he reflected on it, saying he feels old at times.
Mark Scheifele was the first draft pick made by the newly relocated Winnipeg Jets back in 2011.
On Tuesday, he added another chapter to franchise history, becoming the organisation's all-time leader in games played, a feat that moved him past former captain Blake Wheeler.
"It kind of flew under the radar," linemate Kyle Connor said of Scheifele's accomplishment following Tuesday's 5-2 win over the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets. "I don't know if other guys knew, but I kind of had no idea."
Scheifele, 32, was selected seventh overall by Kevin Cheveldayoff and has spent all 898 of his career games with the Jets.
Wheeler briefly played 23 games for the Atlanta Thrashers before the relocation, but Scheifele's milestone reflects a full career rooted entirely in Winnipeg.
How Mark Scheifele proved he was committed to Winnipeg
Last year, he cemented that commitment with a seven-year, $59.5 million extension through 2030-31.
The milestone came as a surprise to Scheifele, who said he hadn't realised the record until a tribute video aired inside Canada Life Centre.
"I didn't know either," he laughed, post-game. "Obviously, it's pretty cool. I've been here for a long time, so I feel old some days. But it's a tremendous honour."
He made the most of the moment, registering three assists in the Jets' win, setting up Josh Morrissey in the second period, then feeding Kyle Connor and Logan Stanley in the final frame. Stanley's 91.1 mph blast sealed the victory.
Through 19 games, Scheifele now sits at 11 goals and 27 points, just six points back of Nathan MacKinnon for the league lead.
Why Mark Scheifele could get the opportunity of a lifetime this winter
In 898 career games, he has recorded 347 goals, 484 assists, and 831 points to go along with 26 goals and 49 points in 53 playoff games. He remains a strong contender for a spot on Canada's 2026 Olympic roster.
The Blue Jackets had a milestone of their own, as Zach Werenski's third-period goal made him the first defenseman in club history to reach 400 points, leaving him third in franchise scoring behind Cam Atkinson and Rick Nash.
Such milestones underpin longevity and impact, with Scheifele continuing to define the Jets' modern era and Werenski's achievement underlining Columbus's emerging core. Both are moments worth remembering as the season moves along.
