A video of an old interview Alexander Ovechkin did with Elliotte Friedman has reemerged after he broke Wayne Gretzky's goal record. The Capitals lost to the New York Islanders today by a final score of 4-1. The result won't matter much for the team as they enjoy an 11-point lead over the Carolina Hurricanes for the lead in the Metro Division, and a 9-point lead over the Toronto Maple Leafs for the Eastern Conference lead. What does matter is the fact that Alex Ovechkin scored the team's lone goal, officially breaking Wayne Gretzky's record for most goals in a career.

Loading from Twitter ...

Since Ovechkin reached the historic milestone, many old interviews have come up about him talking about the record in the past. In fact, Ovechkin himself went on the record in an old interview with Elliotte Friedman saying he didn't think he could break the record. He noted that he would have to have six 50-goal seasons, joking that he wasn't even sure if he would be able to skate in six seasons at the time of recording.

Loading from Twitter ...

Ironically, Gretzky himself said that he believed someone would one day break the record. A video emerged of him from his celebration when he broke what was Gordie Howe's record at the time. In that celebration, he noted that records are meant to be broken, and he was confident that one day he would also be dethroned. He did say that he hoped to still be around to see it happen, and low and behold he was. Gretzky was a big part of the celebration in fact as he made a short speech on the ice immediately after the goal was scored and celebrated again with Ovechkin after the game.

Loading from Twitter ...

Will anyone ever break Ovechkin's new record? Surely Ovechkin himself will, but when he finally retires his total could prove to stand the test of time.
