This afternoon history has been made by Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals against the New York Islanders.

With just one goal to go to break Gretzky's all-time goals record history has now officially been made by Alex Ovechkin.
During the second period the Capitals got a powerplay and Ovi went to work in his iconic left wing spot.
On a one-timer Ovechkin beat Ilya Sorokin one of the few goalies who had not conceded to him in their prior meetings to break the record.
Immediately after putting the puck in the net Ovechkin went into a celebration and dove towards center ice.
After the goal was scored there of course was a celebration and ceremony to celebrate such incredible hockey history.
Gretzky and Ovechkin had a moment of respect after the goal was scored with Gretzky congratulating the new record holder.
With that goal Alex Ovechkin has now become the greatest goal scorer in the history of the NHL and cemented himself in history forever as the man who dethroned Gretzky.
As more information comes out from Ovechkin and Gretzky themselves about this historic day we will continue our coverage of all the post game reaction.
