Ilya Sorokin Responds To Alex Ovechkin After Letting in Historic Goal No. 895

The great chase is finally over as Alex Ovechkin scored his 42nd goal of the season and the 895th of his career, taking sole possession of most goals all time away from Wayne Gretzky.

The goal came during the second period of the Capitals matchup against the New York Islanders.

Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin was between the pipes as normal for the team, especially since they are fighting to stay in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference.

Ironically, Sorokin was one of just a handful of goalies Ovechkin had never scored on coming into the contest so it is fitting that he would beat him for the record.

Ovechkin even hugged Sorokin during the celebration ceremony of the goal after shaking hands with everyone on the team.

The two Russians have been friends for a long time, made evident by how both of them reacted to the situation.

Ovi even gave the goalie a special shoutout during his speech as part of the ceremony, thanking him for letting him score.

After the game, Sorokin was asked how he felt about that and he clearly wasn't bothered by it, going so far as to say he would do it again anytime.

Ironically, Ovechkin himself never thought he would be in this position. At least, that's what he thought six years ago in an interview with Elliotte Friedman.

At this point, Ovechkin has essentially accomplished everything he can in his NHL career, but it would certainly be nice if he could add another Stanley Cup to his resume.
