Vancouver Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford announced his decision on the future of head coach Rick Tocchet with the club. The Vancouver Canucks failed to secure a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year despite having won the Pacific Division and advanced to Game 7 of the 2nd round last year. Head coach Rick Tocchet, who won the Jack Adams Trophy as the top coach in the NHL for 2023-24, wasn't able to lead the club back to the postseason in a year that began with understandably elevated expectations. During a press conference today, Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford announced that the club will not be exercising their option on Tocchet.

Loading from Twitter ...

This doesn't mean that Tocchet's time in Vancouver is through; Rutherford explained that the possibility of him signing a long-term extension to remain behind the bench is still in play. We don't feel it's right to have somebody here that may have his mind somewhere else, and I'd say that about anybody. This is not just about Tocchet, but we believe that Tocchet and his coaching staff did as good a job coaching this team this year as they did the year before, when he was the [Jack Adams] Coach of the Year. I would suspect sometime this week, he'll have a decision. We have gone a long ways from where coaches have been compensated with the Canucks for years, forever, actually, and and we're hoping that he takes that contract and stays. Tocchet was hired in Vancouver following the termination coach Bruce Boudreau in 2022-23, and he was forthcoming when asked about his future with the club. Of course, you want to be back here, but there's a process you have to go through, he said. Obviously, there's a timeframe. But right now for me, there's a process I've got to go through with (team president) Jim (Rutherford) and (GM) Patrik (Allvin), and that's really where it's at.
