Quinn Hughes reveals why Canucks' trade rumors aren't breaking the team
Canucks' Quinn Hughes spoke to reporters and revealed that, despite all the trade rumors swirling, players still believe in themselves and want to win.
After trade rumors began swirling around some Canucks veterans, Quinn Hughes says the chatter isn't shaking the team.
The two Canucks players that have been placed on the trade block
Kiefer Sherwood and Evander Kane have reportedly been placed on the trade block, while Hughes remains off-limits. Despite the noise, Hughes has weighed in on the discussions surrounding Vancouver's roster.
"If we were winning games, Jim wouldn't have said that. I don't exactly know what he said because I'm not on Twitter or anything, but I heard the gist of it, and I think, like I said, if we were winning games, there would be no conversation about this," Hughes stated, as reported by Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre.
The Canucks believe the team needs to get younger, so the front office isn't afraid to make moves involving older players. Sherwood, the team's leading goal scorer this season, could be the first to go. If he's traded, it's possible other veterans could follow.
Fans have been anxious with the Canucks' recent struggles. But Hughes says trade chatter doesn't distract him or the team.
Drawing on Jim Rutherford's remarks about the team needing to get younger, Hughes explained that such conversations usually reflect how the team is performing.
What Quinn Hughes is doing to avoid buying into all the trade noise
While speculation about his future continues, Hughes remains focused on helping the Canucks win games. Like Sidney Crosby during offseason rumors, Hughes acknowledges the uncertainty but keeps his attention on the ice.
"I know our coaches are coaching hard and working hard, and we work extremely hard (as players). We've just got to keep going like that," Hughes admitted.
For now, Hughes is focused on winning games and helping the Canucks turn the season around. According to the defenseman, the best way to quiet trade speculation is simple: stay healthy, play well, and win.
