Longtime Canucks broadcaster and Hockey Night in Canada alum, Jim Robson, dies at 91

Jim Robson is gone at 91, and Vancouver Canucks fans just lost the Hockey Night in Canada voice that raised them.

He wasn’t just a broadcaster, he was the soundtrack.

Robson called Canucks games from the expansion dawn in 1970 through 1999.

For a lot of us, his cadence meant it was really game night.

He started in Port Alberni as a 17-year-old, then built a career that basically ran alongside modern hockey in British Columbia.

The news hit hard when it started moving around social, because it felt official, final, and way too personal.

That second post nails it, his calls from the 1994 run still echo.

His last radio broadcast was Game 7 of the 1994 Final, and even reading that sentence brings back the lump in your throat.

Canucks fans feel this one in a quiet, heavy way, like losing a family voice you assumed would always be there.

Robson had that rare gift, he could make a dump-in sound important.

He was also decorated for it, including the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award in 1992.

That matters, because it confirms what fans already knew.

He didn’t yell to sound big, he painted pictures so you could see the ice.

Even away from the rink, he stayed connected, showing up at Rogers Arena after retirement.

The next pregame tributes are going to feel different.

The next great Canucks moment will still happen, but it won’t sound the same without him.
