Vancouver Canucks prospect Braeden Cootes is sharing some of the valuable lessons that he learned from now-former captain Quinn Hughes before his trade to the Minnesota Wild last Friday night.
The Quinn Hughes era with the Vancouver Canucks officially ended nearly a week ago, as he was traded from Vancouver to the Minnesota Wild for Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and a first round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
But the lessons learned from Hughes are still at the forefront of the mind of prospect Braeden Cootes, who loved his time learning from the now former Canucks captain.
It was eye-opening. Just getting to see what (Hughes) did every day at practice, how good he was, how much he competes, how confident he is, and the way he controls the game out there was quite fun to watch.
Being on the ice with him a good bit was something I'll never forget, because I don't know if I ever will again. He was awesome, so nice to me, so fun to be around. He's a special player. - Braeden Cootes

Cootes also said that Buium, who already set a new Canucks record with multiple points in the first period of his Vancouver debut, could potentially reach Hughes' status later in his career.
I've watched Zeev at the World Juniors. He was really good last year one of the best players in the tournament. He's kinda similar to Quinn. He's not there yet. Quinn's a special talent, but he could get there. - Braeden Cootes
Cootes was taken by the Canucks with the 15th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
Quinn Hughes Already Has Made An Impact With The Wild
Hughes didn't have to wait long to make an impact with the Wild, as he scored in his debut in a Minnesota sweater against the Boston Bruins, a 6-2 win.
He then had an assist in Minnesota's 5-0 win last night over the Washington Capitals; both games were played at home.
Hughes has a year left on his current contract with an AAV (average annual value) of just under $7 million, a figure that will rise substantially on his next deal.
