New Vancouver Canucks defenseman Zeev Buium, who was acquired in the major Quinn Hughes trade with the Minnesota Wild, set a new franchise record in his first game wearing a Canucks sweater.
The hockey world was shocked by the news of the trade of Vancouver Canucks defenseman and captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild, as he was largely linked to the Eastern Conference.
As part of the package to receive Hughes, the Wild sent defenseman Zeev Buium , forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren and first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
Today was the first game in a Canucks sweater for their new players they got for Hughes, and it was Buium who set a new franchise record.
The Canucks not only beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1, but Buium set a Canucks franchise record with a goal and an assist in the first period to become the first defenseman in a Canucks sweater to have multiple points in the first period of his debut with the team.
Zeev Buium is the first defenceman in franchise history to record multiple points in the first period of his Canucks debut, and only the third defenceman to record multiple points in his Canucks debut overall.
The win was only Vancouver's 12th of the year.
The Canucks Were Not Able To Get Quinn Hughes To Agree To A Contract Extension
When talking about the reasons for trading Hughes, Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin said that they were not able to convince him to sign a long-term contract extension.
Hughes has one season left on his current contract with an AAV (average annual value) of just under $7 million.
Wherever Hughes signs a new contract (he's not eligible to do so until July 1), that number could easily double considering what he's accomplished so far in his career.
