Braeden Cootes was a shock selection for the Canucks opening night roster, and now Head Coach Adam Foote has revealed where the first round pick stands. The Vancouver Canucks landed the No. 15 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, and with a lack of superstars, there were worries that teams outside the top-five weren't going to be able to find a star. However, the Canucks may have gotten lucky, with the team drafting Braeden Cootes from the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds with that pick, despite many overlooking the talented forward.
Cootes wants to remain in the NHL
During an interview with NHL.com, Cootes addressed his immediate future in the National Hockey League, and like most young players, he's not worrying too much, simply trying to take it all in and try his best to remain in the NHL. It's been good, it's been a crazy couple of weeks, but I'm just trying to take it all in. I'm just trying to play my game and not worry too much about making mistakes and just go out there and play. I just wanted to play up to my standard [in training camp] and my standard was good enough in their eyes. I just need to keep doing that.

Loading from Twitter ...

The talented young forward has appeared in two games thus far, and while he's yet to score and has registered a -1 differential, it's clear already that he could be a staple of this lineup for years to come in Vancouver. When asked about the potential of Cootes staying beyond a nine-game trial, Head Coach Adam Foote said they're taking it game by game, giving him the chance to remain on the roster beyond that time. We're going day by day, game by game. We're not going to look ahead at when the schedule gets tough or back to backs or anything like that. We're just looking at it one game a time. He's a smart hockey player. Ultimately, Cootes' time as a key piece of the Canucks lineup will come, but if Foote continues to keep giving him chances, there's always the possibility that he remains with this team for the rest of the 2025/26 campaign.
