Shane Doan and Craig Berube now sit on opposite sides of the Maple Leafs’ next internal pressure point.
Toronto didn’t just hire John Chayka as general manager and Mats Sundin as senior executive advisor. It changed the command chain.
That matters for Doan, who has been listed as special advisor to the GM since joining Toronto in June 2023.
When a new GM arrives with real authority, inherited voices lose safety.
Chayka is expected to have final say and report directly to Keith Pelley. That leaves every holdover underneath him exposed.
Daily Faceoff reported that more front-office changes were expected beyond GM and president, with Doan specifically named as likely out if Chayka came in.
Doan’s future no longer looks tied to Toronto
This is more than a Leafs housekeeping note.
The Canucks asked Toronto for permission to speak with Doan, and that tells the league still sees value in his voice.
"Shane Doan (who has talked with the Canucks) is expected to see his time end with the Maple Leafs."

Toronto can’t sell a new era while keeping every old layer untouched.
Berube’s bench needs alignment above it, not a crowded room with leftover titles and unclear influence.
Doan’s exit would not be about one bad call. It would be about Chayka building his own hockey operations group.
That’s why the word "firing" may be too strong until the Leafs announce it.
But the direction is hard to miss.
Sundin gives the room franchise gravity. Chayka gets the keys. Doan looks like the next notable name pushed out by the reset.
