Ben Danford, Toronto's 20-year-old 2024 first-round pick, was suspended two OHL playoff games after a check from behind.

That matters because Craig Berube's Leafs don't need more edge on paper. They need right-shot defenders who stay on the ice when the game gets heavy.
Danford took a five-minute major and a game misconduct after the hit on Sudbury forward Rowan Henderson in Game 2. Now he misses Games 3 and 4 of a series Brantford leads 2-0.
The posts driving the reaction are here:
For Toronto, that's the real story. This isn't about junior theatre. It's about whether a hard-nosed prospect can keep his bite without crossing the line in playoff traffic.
Danford was the No. 31 pick in 2024, and the Leafs drafted him for exactly this style: physical, direct, reliable, and built for defensive-zone work.
But this is where projection gets tricky. A shutdown defender can earn a coach's trust fast, then lose it just as fast when discipline slips.

Why Toronto should pay close attention now

Brantford finished first in the OHL with 106 points, so these are meaningful games, not empty development reps. Missing two of them is a real playoff development cost.
Danford posted 2 goals and 16 points in 37 games after his move to Brantford, and he was named the Eastern Conference's best shot-blocker and top penalty-killer in the OHL coaches' poll.
That profile still fits what Berube will want on the blue line down the road. The suspension just adds a harder question to the file: nasty enough, or too reckless when the ice shrinks?
