Aliaksei Protas left Spencer Carbery with a major problem after a scary collision with Nic Dowd forced him out in Vegas.

The first reporting came from the in-game X clips, showing Protas and Dowd going to the dressing room after they collided in the corner.
The follow-up post called it an unfortunate situation and hoped both players were okay.
That matters because Protas is not just another winger on Carbery's board. He is 25, a 2019 third-round Washington pick, and he carried 23 goals and 47 points through 69 games.
He is also signed through 2028-29 at a $3.375 million cap hit, which makes him one of the better-value forwards in Washington's top six. Lose that player late in March and the lineup math changes fast.
Dowd's side of this story matters too. Vegas acquired the 35-year-old on March 5, and he brought a fourth-line center profile with penalty-kill trust and faceoff detail.
His 2025-26 line sat at 4 goals and 17 points, split between Washington and Vegas, but his value has never been about raw scoring. It is about hard minutes and clean defensive shifts.

Why this hit Washington harder

Carbery can cover one missing winger for a night. Replacing Protas' size, puck protection, and net-drive over a road swing is a different problem, especially with Washington leaning on him for 18:28 a game.
That is where this turns from a scary scene into a real coaching issue. One absence can bump a middle-six winger up, weaken another line, and force more defensive-zone work onto different combinations.
And Protas had been producing. In his last five games before this, he posted 2 goals and 2 assists. That is not a player Washington can shrug off on the fly.
What comes next for Carbery if one of his most useful forwards cannot answer the bell in the next game?
