Penguins surprisingly place former 7th overall pick defenseman on NHL waivers
The Penguins have placed former 7th overall pick defenseman Matt Dumba on waivers today, shortly after acquiring Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak from Edmonton.
The Pittsburgh Penguins placed veteran defenceman Matt Dumba on waivers Friday, a move that followed a significant roster shift.
The trade that was completed earlier in the day between the Oilers and Penguins
Earlier in the day, president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas added Brett Kulak as part of the return for Tristan Jarry in the trade with the Edmonton Oilers, a deal that also brought Stuart Skinner and a second-round pick to Pittsburgh under head coach Dan Muse.
Dumba, 31, recorded one goal and three points in 11 games with the Penguins. He is a pending unrestricted free agent with a $3.75 million cap hit.
Before arriving in Pittsburgh, he spent last season with the Dallas Stars, producing one goal and 10 points in 63 games. Dallas moved Dumba and a second-round pick to the Penguins this past summer in exchange for Vladislav Kolyachonok.
Why Matt Dumba was seen as someone who had so much potential
Selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Wild in 2012, he has 85 goals and 261 points across 748 career NHL games.
Kulak, also 31, brings stability on the back end. He has two assists through 31 games this season and carries a $2.75 million cap hit as a pending UFA.
Since arriving in Edmonton from the Montreal Canadiens in 2022, Kulak has played a steady role during both of the Oilers' runs to the Stanley Cup Final.
