LA Kings on X confirms Jim Hiller is out, D.J. Smith is interim, and the Los Angeles Kings just hit pure playoff-race panic.
Ken Holland didn't hide the message either, he called it a leadership change meant to unlock this group right now.
This lands on a weird day, because the Kings just snapped a five-game skid with a 2-0 win over Calgary.
But that win came after an 8-1 faceplant versus Edmonton, with "Fire Hiller" chants filling the building.
The timing screams urgency, not patience.
The Kings sit at 24-21-14, and the margin is thin enough that one bad week can bury you.
The brutal part is how fast the defending slipped, Los Angeles had allowed 22 goals in the four games before that Flames shutout.
That is not "system noise," that is a team bleeding chances from the slot.
D.J. Smith inherits a Los Angeles Kings mess fast
Kings fans feel the same thing right now, it's frustration mixed with dread because the roster looks too good to be this shaky.
Smith is not a mystery hire, he is a former NHL head coach, and he's been in this room as associate coach.
As a player, Smith was drafted in 1995, second round, by the New York Islanders, and he knows what pro pressure feels like.
The chess move is Matt Greene jumping in as an assistant, and that feels like Holland injecting instant credibility and calm.
Greene was drafted in 2002, second round, by the Edmonton Oilers, and he lived the Kings identity when it actually worked.
On-ice, the path is obvious, tighten the neutral-zone gaps, stop the odd-man looks, and let the skill breathe on the man advantage instead of forcing everything to the walls.
Artemi Panarin is sitting at 19-41-60, Adrian Kempe has 22-27-49, and this can't be a season where that kind of punch dies in low-event mud.
Between the pipes, Darcy Kuemper has 14 wins, and Anton Forsberg just reminded everyone what "one save at a time" looks like.
Now the real test is the next game, because this group doesn't need a speech, it needs a streak.
