Today Edmonton Oilers legend Wayne Gretzky spoke about the unbelievable trade that sent him from Edmonton to the Los Angeles Kings in the summer of 1988.

With the Edmonton Oilers back in the spotlight heading toward yet another playoff berth franchise legend Wayne Gretzky spoke today about the end of his time with the team.
In an interview, Gretzky opened up about the process of being traded from the Oilers to the Kings giving all new details that had never been heard before.
At the time of the trade, Gretzky seemed stunned and saddened to be sent away by the Edmonton Oilers.
However, according to Gretzky in the weeks leading up to the trade he knew there was a possibility that he was going to be traded almost six weeks before the eventual deal was even completed.
It was an extremely difficult six weeks leading up to the actual trade. When it got to a point I thought it could happen, I became sort of quiet about it. I really didn't talk to a lot of people about it. I didn't want it to become a big circus outside of what I knew was going to transpire.

At the time of the trade, there were conflicting reports with some saying Gretzky requested the trade while others believe ownership sent him away.
Gretzky then admitted that while he knew a trade was coming the whole process was a blur that ended with him being a member of the Los Angeles Kings at the end of it.
It was sort of like a hurricane: it comes through and you didn't see it coming. All of a sudden it just blazed through and it was done. It was kind of weird that way.

In the end, Gretzky then reminisces on what could have been in Edmonton admitting that his only potential regret is leaving potential championships on the table with the Oilers.
I have no regrets. The only thing I think back on are friendships and people I don't get to see as often. And the fact that I often wonder how many championships we could have won - seven, eight, nine? I don't know.

The trade involving Gretzky changed the landscape of the NHL in unimaginable ways paving the way for blockbuster trades while also building hockey on the West Coast to places no one thought the league could go.
Of course, all of this came at the expense of the Edmonton Oilers dynasty breaking up an incredible championship nucleus far too soon.
