Former Edmonton Oilers defenseman Tyson Barrie recently spoke to the media after retiring and addressed his involvement in the blockbuster trade for Mattias Ekholm. Earlier this week, former Edmonton Oilers defenseman Tyson Barrie announced his retirement from the NHL after 14 seasons. During his time in the NHL Barrie spent three of those seasons with the Edmonton Oilers before being traded to the Nashville Predators at the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline.

Loading from Twitter ...

At the time, Oilers fans were ecstatic to welcome and elite two-way defenseman like Mattias Ekholm to Edmonton. Today, Tyson Barrie shared his reaction to the news of the trade when it happened.
Tyson Barrie Shares His Honest Reaction To Being Traded For Mattias Ekholm
In a new interview, Barrie was asked to recall the day his tenure in Edmonton ended with a trade. First, Barrie revealed that he found out the team had acquired Ekholm after receiving a text from former Oilers goalie Mike Smith. I found out Mike Smith texted me and sent me a screenshot of the trade. They got you a d partner. Barrie then recalls he asked Smith who they gave up only to find out moments later it was him. Oh, who did we give up? Then before he could respond I get a call from Kenny Holland and I went oh no. To Barrie's surprise he had just been dealt to the Nashville Predators who were at that point not a contender. Despite being sent to a worse situation Barrie holds no ill will toward the organization for making the move. It definitely caught me off guard but you can see what the Oilers have done. They've been to the Stanley Cup Finals twice so obviously it was a good move for them.

Loading from Twitter ...

Barrie would go on to play two more full seasons in the NHL before retiring from the game. As Tyson Barrie heads into the next steps of his career off the ice we wish him all the best moving forward.
