Stan Bowman of the Edmonton Oilers is reportedly close to completing deals that would see veteran forwards Adam Henrique and Victor Arvidsson leave the team as the organization looks for more cap room ahead of free agency. The Oilers are going to be very busy throughout the entire organization over the next few days as free agency opens up tomorrow at noon eastern time. Currently, the team has just over 11 million dollars in cap room, but with star defenseman Evan Bouchard still unsigned, that leaves very little room for improvements elsewhere in the lineup. The team has already shored up their depth with a couple of key re-signings, but now it appears as though they are about to lose depth in other ways. According to NHL reporter James Courville-Lynch, Stan Bowman is working on trades that would move veteran forwards Adam Henrique and Victor Arvidsson today.

Loading from Twitter ...

Moving both players would net the Oilers 7 million in cap room, assuming they don't take any salary back in the deals. With Bouchard expected to get around 9.5 million, that would leave the team with roughly 8.5 million dollars in cap room heading into tomorrow, assuming Bouchard is signed. According to the same sources that revealed the Henrique and Arvidsson trades, the plan is to announce Bouchard's contract extension today, so that will likely come as soon as these trades are finalized.

Loading from Twitter ...

While Bouchard is certainly a far more important part of the team than Henrique and Arvidsson combined, it seems that the Oilers will be heading into next season worse off than they were this year no matter what. As such, they will need improvements from some of their players in order to go on another deep playoff run. Stuart Skinner in particular could feel the pressure as a better performance in goal could be the difference between lifting the Stanley Cup or another heartbreaking season. With Connor McDavid set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, it would be wise for the Oilers to do everything in their ability to avoid that heartbreak.
