Tensions boiled over at Oilers practice today, as Jake Walman and Trent Frederic were seen yapping at each other after teammates were tossed on the ground.

Tempers flared at Edmonton Oilers practice on Friday as teammates Trent Frederic and Jake Walman got into a brief verbal exchange after a physical battle.
It didn't escalate beyond words, but it did show some long-missing emotion from an Oilers group often criticized for playing too passively.
"Walman and Frederic yapping at each other after Frederic tossed him down. More spirited battles than I've seen in a while in practice." He added, "Much needed. A bit of animosity can be good."

- Jason Gregor
Frederic, who inked an eight-year extension this summer, has gotten off to a tough start this season.
A player known for his physicality and pesky play, he's been challenged to be more engaged, and perhaps that frustration boiled over at the wrong time.
Walman, meanwhile, was returning from injury and isn't one to back away from anyone, which explains the brief dustup.

Those in attendance revealed that tempers cooled off quickly and practice resumed as normal

According to those in attendance, things quickly cooled off, and both players continued practice without incident.
As Jason Gregor noted, it was simply two competitors showing some fire, which many fans may actually have found encouraging rather than concerning.
Supporters online have called for the Oilers to bring that same kind of energy and edge into actual games.
Too often this season, Edmonton has appeared disengaged, missing the grit, urgency, and emotion needed to shift momentum when games tighten up.
If the Oilers can bring this kind of practice intensity to each night's performances, it may be the turning point. A little fire now might just be exactly what this team needs to spark a run.
