His big break came during the 1970 season when he joined the NHL as an on-ice official. He would go on to have almost a three-decade career and earn himself immense respect across the hockey community, by players and fans alike.
Leon Stickle officiated nearly 2,300 NHL games over his career
During his time as a referee, Leon worked 2,069 regular-season games, 206 playoff contests, six Stanley Cup Finals, two Canada Cups, as well as the 1979 Challenge Cup and Rendez-vous Series. After putting away his whistle in 1997, he continued to shape the sport by mentoring young officials through his roles as a supervisor in both the Central Hockey League and the NHL. His guidance helped pave the way for countless referees and linesmen who aimed to follow in his footsteps. Leon's heart was always with his family and friends. During his 58-year marriage to his wife Nancy, he was a devoted husband, father, and Poppa, who loved nothing more than spending time with his loved ones. In retirement, he found joy with his tee times at the Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club and in keeping his garden in tip-top shape. Leon's kindness, humour, and integrity touched everyone he met, and his impact will live on in the memories of his family and friends, as well as the many officials he inspired through his legendary career. Rest in peace, Leon.
