Recently, Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman addressed the team's continued worrisome goaltending play and his plans to turn the team around. The Edmonton Oilers have monumentally struggled over the last several weeks leading captain Connor McDavid to call out his teammates. The blame for the Oilers struggles could be placed on a number of players but the goaltending has been especially horrific this season. Starting with Stuart Skinner who has a 2.91 goals against average and a 0.884 save percentage which are both by far career lows since Skinner became a full-time NHLer. Then there is Calvin Pickard who has somehow been much worse than Skinner with a 4.00 goals against average and an astonishing 0.836 save percentage.

Loading from Twitter ...

These abysmal numbers from the Oilers goaltending duo has made it clear to most fans and many analysts that a change is still needed. Now, Stan Bowman has given his opinion on where things stand and what he plans to do to fix the situation.
Stan Bowman doubles down on goaltending not being the issue in Edmonton
During a recent appearance at the NHL's GM Meetings, Bowman was directly asked about the Oilers' struggles and who is to blame. Bowman refused to call out his goaltending as a problem claiming the duo the Oilers have is around league average. Our goalies have been average - haven't been elite and they haven't been bad. Sort of the way our team has been. I don't know if they performed really any differently than our forwards and our defence. We're just not clicking as a group. That position gets more attention. I'm not sure it's more of a problem. Bowman continued on and placed the blame evenly on offense, defense, and goaltending claiming that if goaltending was the problem it would be more evident. We've had ups and downs throughout with both goalies, the defence and the forwards, he said. It would probably be clearer if (goaltending was) costing us games night after night, but that's just not it. These claims from Bowman are shocking as statistically the Oilers have two of the bottom 15 goaltenders in the league this season to have played a game. Clearly, goaltending has been an absolute mess this season that is costing the Edmonton Oilers wins and Bowman for some reason refuses to address the issue. Hopefully, either Skinner and Pickard can get their act together or Bowman will finally realize that the Oilers duo is not good enough to get the job done. As the season continues, the Oilers goaltending situation will continue to be a crucial problem to follow.
