NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed that even if the Oilers do make a goalie change, they won't have nearly enough cap space for an impact goaltender. The day has come to move past the concerns about the difficulties in placing the Edmonton Oilers' goaltending on the to-do list and realize that it is time to come up with a solution. Management in Edmonton has waited long enough to give Stuart Skinner the sole No. 1 spot. He can definitely stay in the duo, but there is definitely a need to improve behind him if they want to conquer that final hurdle to gain the championship title.
What Stuart Skinner did so well two seasons ago
Two seasons ago, Skinner was among the best goaltenders in the NHL and led the Edmonton Oilers all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Nevertheless, since then, his stats are lower, his confidence seems to be shaken, and that of his teammates as well. The promising trajectory has been exchanged for one that has stagnated. But to add to the problem is the financial reality. As was pointed out by insider David Pagnotta, the fact is that Edmonton does not have the cap room to make a quick fix. They don't have cap space now for a quick fix; even if they do make a goalie change and Skinner's the guy out, its $2.6m, if you want an impact goalie you're probably looking at $5m+, they just don't have the space for it. - David Pagnotta

Loading from Twitter ...

Why the Oilers will have a hard time acquiring a star goalie
Even if Skinner was going to be traded to solve the problem, his $2.6 million salary would certainly not be enough to sign a superstar goalie who would be priced no less than $5 million. As such, the team finds itself stuck between a need to improve its goalie position and the inability to make such an adjustment. Skinner still works hard and stays positive, but there is no trust left in him. The Oilers cannot squander another year waiting to see him come through again. It's about time that GM Stan Bowman made a bold move to prevent another playoff opportunity slipping away from them due to the lack of saves.
