Sportsnet had the spark, and Kris Knoblauch hit back after Connor McDavid's coaching praise for Tampa followed Edmonton's slide to 34-28-9.

Connor McDavid scored his 38th in Saturday's 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay, then praised Jon Cooper's structure and detail. That landed because Edmonton looked scattered again.
Knoblauch's answer mattered. When losing piles up, he said, everyone has to look in the mirror.
That is not coach-speak. That is a bench boss drawing a line after his captain put systems, preparation, and execution under a bright light.
This did not start on Saturday. Leon Draisaitl said on February 5 that it starts with the coaches, then widened the blame to everyone.
You can see the turn here, the moment this stopped sounding like praise and started sounding like pressure.
"When things are going well, there's usually very little criticism. When there's losing being had, and you're not having the success that you anticipated, then yeah, everyone needs to look in the mirror."

- Kris Knoblauch
McDavid has 38-78-116. Draisaitl, now on LTIR, sits at 35-62-97. The stars are still producing, which makes the team slippage hit harder.

Connor McDavid pushed the Edmonton Oilers bench

Fans are right to read this as a real crack in the mood, not a harmless postgame quote.
The issue is five-man shape. Edmonton too often loses layers above the puck, then asks McDavid to solve the next shift with speed and talent. That is not playoff hockey.
Knoblauch had to answer, because silence would have looked like surrender. A coach cannot let public frustration turn into private drift.
The next test comes Tuesday at Utah. If Edmonton cleans up its reloads and manages the puck through the middle, this story cools fast.
If not, the deadline noise gets replaced by something louder. It becomes a question about whether this room still trusts the plan.
