The Mug NHL's deadline bet, Jason Dickinson barely saw 5v5 ice for the Edmonton Oilers, and the matchup-centre plan already looks shaky.

Dickinson is 30, a 2013 first-round pick by the Dallas Stars, and Edmonton brought him in to kill plays early, not chase them late.
Chicago retained 50 percent, so his $4.25M cap hit plays as $2.125M on the Oilers' books, and he can walk as a UFA after 2025-26.
That price screams "play him in the hard minutes" when the forecheck gets mean and the middle of the ice turns into a knife fight.
Instead, the X clip notes Dickinson had the second-lowest 5v5 ice time among Oilers forwards versus Carolina.
The context matters, because the Hurricanes ran Edmonton's zone exits through a blender in a 6-3 final.
If your new matchup centre is stapled, you are either protecting him, or you do not trust the reads yet.
Dickinson's 2025-26 line is 6-7-13 in 48 games, which is fine, but his value is supposed to show up when the puck is nowhere near the net.

Jason Dickinson and the Edmonton Oilers need answers

Oilers fans can feel the panic creep in, because this roster does not have time for a "wait until he settles" project.
Carolina plays fast through layers, so the cleanest fit for Dickinson should be short shifts, hard stops, and faceoff-to-clear sequences.
If he is losing those reps to softer looks, the deadline logic starts to wobble.
This also hints at a line-combo issue, because a defensive centre needs wingers who finish checks and live on the wall.
Sunday at Vegas is the next stress test, and that is the kind of game where a $2.125M matchup pivot has to show up between the dots.
If the minutes stay light, Edmonton's deadline "why" changes fast, from solution to question.
