The Oilers were recently accused of mishandling their 50/50 raffles in a fraudulent way, and the team has responded to those claims, calling them misleading.

The Oilers were recently accused of illegally handling their 50/50 raffles fraudulently, and the team has refuted those allegations as inaccurate.
The Edmonton Oilers were also accused of skimming millions from their 50/50 draws to privately-owned enterprises, but the team denied such allegations outright.
It is alleged by the Oilers that the Investigative Journalism Foundation (IJF) incorrectly portrayed the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation's (EOCF) 50/50 program in percentages without due consideration of the net positive impact it has on charities.
"Fundamentally misleads readers ... by focusing on percentages rather than the unprecedented charitable impact being delivered to Alberta communities."

These numbers, they say, speak for themselves. From 2017 to 2020, $9.9 million was given to charities. During 2021 to 2024, a staggering $66.9 million was given to charities, a 576% increase compared with the previous time frame.
And in 2024 alone, there were $20 million in charity available, twice the total from the last four years.
The Oilers take issue with IJF's reporting of overlooking the serious dollars invested in developing the 50/50 from a small in-arena raffle to the largest professional sports charity raffle.
Of note were fee explanations: $81 million, which was purportedly going to Win50, is gross revenue over a four-year term, not net profit.

The Oilers Claim That the Report Fails to Discuss all the Expenses Involved in Running 50/50 Raffles

Technology expenses, advertising, marketing, compliance, and prizes incurred on business expansions are excluded.
The agreement with Win50 boosted ticket revenue from $25 million (2017-2020) to $318.7 million (2021-2024). Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) also okays all expenses every year and scrutinizes all costs, the team further stated.
The EOCF is governed through an independent board (9 of 12 non-OEG members) and is independently audited every year.
The Oilers insist unprecedented dollars are making their way towards Alberta charities from these investments. Central to what is argued here is public trust.
The Oilers are highlighting transparency and accountability while invoking all-time charitable donations.
While critics grumble some more about the arrangements, there's something indisputable: Alberta charities are getting unprecedented support through the 50/50 plan.
