The Oilers have announced that goaltender Matt Tomkins has been recalled from the AHL's Bakersfield Condors and will join the team for the final preseason game. The Edmonton Oilers finally made a move that has been long-rumored to be in the works when they acquired another goaltender, this time, former Utah Mammoth netminder Connor Ingram. Edmonton landed the 28-year-old in a trade for future considerations, and the Mammoth even did the Oilers a solid by picking up $800,000 (40 percent) of Ingram's salary this season. After assigning him to the AHL, the team made a goalie recall today, but no, it is not Ingram, but rather Matt Tomkins.

Loading from Twitter ...

It is expected that Tomkins will join the team for their final preseason game tonight against the Vancouver Canucks.
Matt Tomkins was Placed on Waivers a few Days ago and Cleared
The Oilers placed Tomkins on waivers on September 30, and he subsequently cleared and was sent to the AHL's Condors. Edmonton signed Tomkins to a two-year contract in July. Given Tomkins' age, he is what he is: an AHL-level goalie who can fill in as a starter or backup role for the Condors, and get called up to the NHL whenever depth is needed. However, now that the team acquired Ingram, the chances of Tomkins getting NHL action are even lower. Tomkins held his own a couple of seasons ago for the Tampa Bay Lightning, accumulating a 3-2-1 record and a .892 save percentage, but he is best suited as someone who can hold down the minor-league fort. Should either Stuart Skinner or Calvin Pickard, the Oilers' top guys, suffer an injury, Tomkins would have been called on to save the day, but that seems even less likely with Ingram in the fold. In 2024-25, Tomkins had a .907 save percentage, 2.55 goals-against average, and a 12-10-4 record for the Syracuse Crunch, the Lightning's AHL affiliate. It remains to be seen whether Tomkins will get any action tonight in Vancouver.
