That is the real tension here. Edmonton traded for the 30-year-old Jarry on Dec. 12, and he is signed through 2027-28 after arriving from Pittsburgh with Samuel Poulin in the Stuart Skinner deal.

If Stauffer is right, the room is still pulling together. If he is wrong, every wobble in net gets framed like a culture problem instead of a hockey problem.

The hockey problem is simpler. Edmonton still needs cleaner exits, fewer slot looks, and steadier saves behind a blue line that just added Connor Murphy and a bottom six that just added Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach.

Murphy came in at half of his $4.4 million cap hit, and Dickinson gives Kris Knoblauch another penalty-kill centre. Dach, 23, was Chicago's 2021 second-round pick, 62nd overall, and he adds straight-line bite.

The timing matters because Edmonton just beat Vegas 4-2, with Leon Draisaitl scoring his 34th and Connor Ingram stopping 24 shots. Tuesday in Colorado is the next stress test.

Connor McDavid has 35-73-108, Draisaitl sits at 34-58-92, and Evan Bouchard is at 18-55-73. The star layer still screams contender.

Fans are not crazy for feeling twitchy, because Cup-or-bust talk gets louder when McDavid is signed for only two more years at $12.5 million AAV and every deadline chip gets pushed in.

Still, this tweet reads like a line in the sand. It says the players are pushing each other, not splintering.

That matters more than the noise around one practice. If Jarry settles, Murphy kills rushes, and Dickinson shrinks the third-line chaos, this looks like a hard playoff team again.
