NHL Rosters reported Matthew Peca traded for Wyatt Newpower Tuesday, a Lightning Blues AHL swap that shifts veteran scoring and defensive depth.

Matthew Peca, 32, was drafted in 2011 in the 7th round by the Tampa Bay Lightning and captained the Springfield Thunderbirds before this move. The veteran center plays on an AHL deal, so no NHL cap hit is involved.
Wyatt Newpower, 28, went undrafted and developed through the ECHL before becoming a physical depth defenseman inside the St. Louis Blues pipeline.
This is not a salary maneuver. It is a hockey trade focused purely on AHL lineup balance as both organizations prepare for the final month of the season.
Peca brings a clear identity to the Syracuse Crunch. He is a pace driver who can play top-six minutes and help run the man advantage.
Last season Peca produced 31-32-63 in 71 games with Springfield and remained one of the Thunderbirds' most reliable offensive creators entering this year.
That level of veteran offense matters for Syracuse. The Crunch are pushing for strong playoff positioning and need experienced playmakers in tight games.
Newpower heads the opposite direction with a very different toolbox. His value comes from defensive reliability and physical shifts on the blue line.

Matthew Peca trade reveals different needs for Blues and Lightning

Many fans reacted quickly online, and the early mood around the Lightning pipeline was simple. Peca's skill set feels like a clean stylistic fit for Syracuse.
Newpower gives Springfield another defense-first option when protecting leads late in games. Those minutes often fall on depth defenders during playoff pushes.
For the Blues organization the logic is straightforward. Add a defenseman capable of grinding tough AHL minutes while younger prospects handle offensive roles.
For the Lightning system the upside is equally clear. Peca adds proven scoring touch and leadership to a team preparing for meaningful April hockey.
Small trades rarely dominate headlines across the NHL.
But when the AHL playoffs arrive, moves like this often become the quiet difference between surviving a series or going home early.
