A shocking reunion between the Oilers and Andreas Athanasiou was proposed by Heavy.com, as the Oilers could look to offer the former 30-goal scorer a PTO.

The Edmonton Oilers, like every contender, are always searching for affordable depth.
This summer, that could mean extending Professional Tryout Offers (PTOs) to unsigned veterans who are attempting to demonstrate they still possess the chops to play in the NHL.
One possibility is former 30-goal scorer Andreas Athanasiou, who was linked to the team by Heavy.com.
"Now that Athanasiou is a UFA, he could be a worthwhile gamble for the Oilers. Edmonton loses nothing by reuniting with the 31-year-old on a PTO. If he proves he's still got something left in the tank, he could be a solid addition to the Oilers' bottom six."

Drafted in the fourth round by Detroit in 2012, Andreas Athanasiou broke out with a 30-goal season in 2018-19. The following season, he was dealt to Edmonton at the deadline but had an uneventful, brief tenure with one goal in nine games.

Athanasiou was placed on Waivers by Chicago after a Difficult Season

The Oilers let him go through free agency, and his career has stalled ever since. Most recently, he signed a two-year, $8.5 million deal with Chicago but was waived during a difficult 2024-25 season.
Now 31 and a UFA, Athanasiou may be worth a second glance for Edmonton on a PTO. There is no risk to the Oilers in doing so: if he plays well, he could carve out a spot on the third or fourth line; if not, the two sides part ways.
Realistically, there is no returning to 30-goal form. But if Athanasiou can chip in with 10-15 goals while using his size and speed to provide a physical edge, he could help shore up Edmonton's bottom six.
His best chance would be pushing the likes of Mattias Janmark or Kasperi Kapanen for ice time.
For a contending team with limited cap space, a low-risk gamble on a once-prolific scorer makes sense. Athanasiou likely won't move the needle, but he could quietly fill a depth role, and that's all a team may require at times.
