Edmonton Oilers analyst urges Stan Bowman to acquire top-10 NHL defenseman before it's too late

The Edmonton Oilers are still searching for the spark that led them to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, failing to find consistency to this point in the 2024-25 campaign.

Their problems have been pegged on various aspects of their game: goaltending, defense, and what used to be a powerhouse power play.

Although the latter seems to be getting back to form, the other two issues are still very serious and pertinent with December on the horizon.

Edmonton Oilers reporter Luke Gazdic recently floated a bold solution: trading for offensive defenseman Mike Matheson from the Montreal Canadiens.

Speaking on the Oilers' trade deadline needs, Gazdic said Matheson could address both the power play and defensive struggles.

Still only 30, Matheson has been one of the better Canadiens this season, with 13 points in 20 games, and doesn't shy away from being physical.

With the Habs on the outside of the playoff picture, however, and a crop of young defensemen champing at the bit for opportunities, they might look to move the veteran blueliner.

Acquiring Matheson won't be inexpensive, as his fine play makes him a valued commodity. Still, with the NHL trade deadline only a few months away, the rumors will get louder.

Oilers GM Stan Bowman might feel the need to make that big move to lock down the roster for a playoff run.

As long as the playoff hopes for the Canadiens continue to dim, one might just find veterans like Matheson available. Trade talks are sure to heat up as the weeks and months go by.
