A soundbite has come out from NHL insider Darren Dreger where he calls out the Edmonton Oilers and Stan Bowman for not addressing the team's biggest weakness.

This season the Edmonton Oilers have struggled to find the consistent high-level play that led them to the Stanley Cup Finals last season.

Add in an injury to Oilers forward Connor McDavid and the team finds themselves barely clinging on to a playoff spot at the moment.

Throughout the season fans and media have been trying to find the exact cause of the Edmonton Oilers' poor play.

Eventually, it was determined that bad defensive play mixed with inconsistent goaltending has been the major culprit of the Oilers' situation.

Tonight NHL insider Darren Dreger expanded on this concept that many have talked about and even called out the Oilers front office urging them to do something.

Darren Dreger urges the Edmonton Oilers to make a big move on defense

In a new interview for The Edmonton Journal Darren Dreger spoke about the Edmonton Oilers plans to get things back on track.

When discussing what the Edmonton Oilers need to do Darren Dreger seemed frustrated and referenced that the Oilers front office need to do something about the defensive unit.

We're going to be talking for a long time, until or unless management does something, about that defense. Dreger said on Monday, via Edmonton Journal. It does seem like that's the deepest and darkest area of concern from a defensive and an offensive perspective. It's pretty obvious.

He continues on and goes into more detail that the Edmonton Oilers lack players who are able to move the puck to the team's stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

It's basic hockey. If you don't get the puck out of your own end, or you can't transport the puck, into the hands of McDavid and Draisaitl, and go down the list of all the offensive weapons they have, that's going to be a problem. And it has been. It's what I think has put this team in a place of wild inconsistency. Dreger added.

As of now the Edmonton Oilers have not been involved in any major rumors or reports to acquire a big-time defenseman in recent weeks.

GM Stan Bowman also has to work within the limited salary cap space that the Edmonton Oilers have which limits how impactful of a player he can land.

It remains to be seen what exactly Stan Bowman can get done but it appears that a move must be made to keep the Oilers in a contending position.
