Josh Samanski is giving Kris Knoblauch a cheap middle-six option right when Edmonton's roster math matters.

Stan Bowman signed the 23-year-old German centre to a two-year entry-level deal starting in 2025-26, and the hit is just $975,000 per season. No clauses. No retention. Just a clean cap bet.
That's why this move is paying off already. Edmonton didn't need another star add. The Oilers needed a big body down the middle who could settle shifts, win pucks, and keep the bench from overloading Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Samanski arrived without draft hype. He was undrafted, 23, and coming off 40 points in 52 DEL games with Straubing when Bowman moved. That profile screamed projection. Now it looks like roster construction.
The recall on January 26 mattered because it showed the staff saw him as more than Condors depth. Edmonton brought him up for NHL games, not a one-day look.
By January 7, he had already put up 25 points in 32 AHL games. That gave Knoblauch a centre with touch, not just reach and checking detail.

Why this changes Edmonton's next move

This is the real payoff for Bowman. If Samanski can hold bottom-six minutes, Edmonton doesn't have to spend offseason assets chasing a depth centre for the sake of doing something. That's leverage.
"Josh Samanski continuing to grow as a Edmonton Oiler!"
It also sharpens the next-game fit. A coach can trust this kind of player on a back-to-back, on the road, or in a low-event matchup when the top six need cleaner support.
Bowman took a low-cost swing. Samanski is turning it into deadline flexibility and a real roster answer.
