NHL makes official decision on supplemental discipline case involving Mikko Rantanen
The NHL has made its official decision regarding any supplemental discipline for Mikko Rantanen, and he will not get anything more than the automatic one-game ban.
Mikko Rantanen is going to watch the Dallas Stars' next game from the sidelines after a couple of ugly incidents over the last week, but that appears to be it.
The Stars forward had been automatically suspended one game for boarding Calgary Flames winger Matt Coronato, the NHL's department of player safety announced on Sunday.
It was the second game misconduct penalty that Rantanen has incurred over the last week after a hit on New York Islanders defenceman Alexander Romanov back on Tuesday. He did not receive a suspension on that play, though.
What led to Mikko Rantanen's automatic one-game ban
According to the DoPS, any player who incurs two game misconduct penalties before playing 41 consecutive regular-season games without another penalty of the sort shall be suspended automatically for the next game for his team.
The DoPS has decided that Rantanen will not receive any further discipline following the automatic one-game ban.
The controversial moment for Rantanen came in the Stars' 3-2 shootout loss to the Flames on Saturday night.
With less than a minute remaining in the second period, Rantanen hit Coronato from behind, and he went headfirst into the boards.
Why the Flames were lucky in this situation
Coronato immediately left the ice with a bloody nose as teammate Jonathan Huberdeau went after Rantanen after the whistle was blown. Luckily for the Flames, Coronato returned to the game early in the third period.
Along with the game misconduct, Rantanen was given an additional penalty for also fighting Huberdeau, who received a 10-minute misconduct for retaliating to the hit.
Had Coronato been injured and forced to miss an extended period of time, it's likely that Rantanen would have received a much more serious outcome in this matter.
