William Carrier tried to play through pain in Game 3. It backfired in the worst way possible.

The Carolina Hurricanes forward left the bench late in the first period after absorbing a hit on Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Jeremy Lauzon, visibly favoring his right arm.
What happened next tells the real story of this injury.
Carrier came back. He skated a handful of shifts in the second period, clearly compromised.
On one of those shifts, his clearing attempt from the defensive zone was intercepted at the blue line by Brayden McNabb, who fed Mitch Marner for his second goal of the game and a 3-0 Vegas lead.
That sequence broke the game open.
Rod Brind'Amour's staff pulled Carrier for good before the third period. Carolina then played 51 minutes shorthanded at forward and nearly pulled off the greatest comeback in Stanley Cup Final history, scoring four unanswered goals before falling 5-4 in double overtime.

The real question facing Carolina before Game 4

Medical speculation from athletic therapists points toward a possible left-side separated shoulder.
Lower-grade separations can be managed with injections and heavy taping, but the footage suggests something more significant.
Carrier has a history of upper-body trouble - he missed most of 2023-24 in Vegas with a similar designation.
The decision facing Brind'Amour is not whether Carrier is tough enough to play. He already proved that.
The decision is whether a diminished version of Carrier actively hurts Carolina more than Nicolas Deslauriers stepping into the lineup would.

A cruel twist inside T-Mobile Arena

Carrier won the Stanley Cup with the Golden Knights in 2023. Three years later, a hit from one of their own defensemen may have ended his current championship run in the same building where he celebrated his first.
Game 4 is Tuesday night, and Carolina trails the series 2-1.
