Tonight, a new statement from Toronto Maple Leafs GM John Chayka has provided clarity on Auston Matthews' future with the organization amidst potential uncertainty.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off one of their worst seasons in the Auston Matthews era.
After missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, GM Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube were fired, meaning major change was coming to Toronto.
The setback and new regime in Toronto have led many fans and analysts to believe a rebuild could be in the plans for the Maple Leafs, especially after winning the NHL Draft lottery.
With a rebuild remaining a possibility, questions have been asked about Auston Matthews' future in Toronto, with some believing he could want a change of scenery, much like his former teammate Mitch Marner, who is now in the Stanley Cup Finals.
With so much uncertainty surrounding both Matthews and the Maple Leafs organization as a whole, new GM John Chayka spoke to the media and addressed Matthews' future head-on.

During a recent press conference, Chayka was asked about his relationship so far with Matthews and if the Maple Leafs captain is still part of the team's long-term plans.
Chayka confirmed that he and Matthews are on the same page and that Matthews takes a lot of pride in being the captain and helping the team out of this dark time.
We've had several conversations with him and his representatives, and what I saw was a happy captain. Someone who's got a lot of pride to be the captain of the Leafs. Someone who wants to win in Toronto, which aligns with how we're thinking about it.

As of now, it seems like the Maple Leafs front office is pulling in the same direction as Matthews, but if the team gets off to a slow start, things could change quickly.
The Maple Leafs need to take advantage of this offseason and re-tool the roster quickly to bring back regular-season success and secure playoff hockey back in Toronto once again.
