Anaheim Ducks rookie Sam Colangelo sparked a major controversy online yesterday with his jersey choice that some thought was disrespectful to hockey greats.

There is only one jersey in the entirety of the NHL that no player will ever wear again, and that is Wayne Gretzky's number 99. However, some fans are starting to hold Mario Lemieux's 66 in the same regard. When Anaheim Ducks rookie Sam Colangelo decided to pick number 66 as his number, it sparked controversy online among those fans who hold the number in high regard. Take a look.

"Believe Colangelo would be just the third player to wear number 66 since Mario Lemieux retired in 2006. He would join Josh Ho-Sang (2016-18 with the Islanders) and TJ Brodie (2010-11 with the Flames)."

Upset fans took to social media to share either their dislike for the rookie choosing 66 as his number or their support for the rookie as the number isn't retired for a reason.

I dont care what anyone says, 66 should be retired league wide like 99

Some fans even pointed fun at the fact that the number isn't retired league wide, and other players like Josh Ho-Sang already have worn it.

Quite frankly I am disgusted by this, the NHL should retire this number league wide like they did 99. A great player wore that for a considerable time and left his mark on a fanbase forever, and us New York Islanders fan will never forget Josh Ho-Sang!
