Ondrej Palat’s six-man Olympic goal nearly sank Team Canada, and IIHF officiating just lit a fuse.
On Wednesday in Milan, Canada survived Team Czechia 4-3 in overtime in the Olympic quarterfinals.
Palat ripped a one-timer to put Czechia up 3-2 with 7:42 left in the third period.
Nick Suzuki tied it with 3:27 left, then Mitch Marner ended it 1:22 into OT.
Macklin Celebrini finished 1-2-3, while Jordan Binnington stopped 20 and Lukas Dostal made 37.
Now for the part that has fans boiling.
On the Palat sequence, Czechia had six skaters on the ice, and all six celebrated together while nobody noticed, including the officials.
That’s the kind of “too many men” moment you expect to get whistled instantly, because you cannot fix it after the puck is in.
Ondrej Palat puts Team Canada on edge
Canadian fans are not laughing, they’re furious that something this basic slipped through in an Olympic knockout game.
If Canada didn't come back, this would have become the headline of the tournament, and not in a fun way.
The bigger worry is what comes next.
One blown count chips away at trust, and the next tight semifinal is going to feel tense the second a line change gets messy.
Canada escaped, but the IIHF has to clean this up fast, or the next miss might actually decide a medal.
Update: There were not six, but actually eight Czechia players on the ice for the goal. It's worse than we thought.
