Paul Coffey is back on the Edmonton Oilers coaching staff, and the playoff push just got real tense.
This is not rumor season anymore, it is official. Edmonton announced it Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
Coffey steps back behind the bench after moving upstairs last summer into an advisor role.
He originally joined the staff on November 13, 2023, and the blue line tightened up fast.
From that hire through the end of the 2024-25 regular season, Edmonton allowed 2.78 goals per game, fifth-best in the league over that span.
The timing screams urgency, coming out of the Olympic break with the room needing answers.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch basically said the staff will benefit from Coffey’s voice right now.
Paul Coffey brings edge back to Edmonton Oilers
Oilers fans have been begging for a little bite and a little honesty, because the current vibes have felt way too soft.
Coffey said there are 24 games left, and he believes there’s time to build momentum for another long run.
That “24 games left” line matters, because Edmonton is sitting at 28-22-8 as of today.
If you are looking for the on-ice why, it is simple. Coffey pushes reads and retrievals faster, and that can clean up the ugly chances off failed exits.
It also takes pressure off Knoblauch, because Coffey can own the defence details while the head coach manages the full bench.
Coffey is expected back with the club Friday, then the Oilers return next week with games in California after the break.
This is the kind of move that can flip a season, but only if the stars buy in right away.
