The Devils have Samuel Montembeault in their sights

The Canadiens' goaltending situation was already problematic before the arrival of Casey DeSmith. Now it's even more so.

Kent Hughes absolutely must trade at least one goaltender before the start of the season, because a three-man household in front of the net simply doesn't work, according to many.

Cayden Primeau will obviously be subject to the waivers, and according to Marc Dumont, he shouldn't be claimed by any team. That leaves three candidates whose names you know.

Frank Seravalli mentioned that the Devils' preference was to leave Akira Schmid in the AHL for the season, despite his fine playoff performances. So they'd need someone to back up Vitek Vanecek, and Samuel Montembeault would be a target for New Jersey, according to Alex Chauvancy.

Chauvancy adds that if Samuel isn't available, Casey DeSmith could be a very good candidate for them too. He has just one year left on his contract, and the Devils are trying very hard to acquire Connor Hellebuyck, who also has one year left on his contract.

Montembeault mentioned having been contacted by Kent Hughes' assistant to tell him not to worry. It would therefore be very surprising if he were available on the open market, but the GM still has to listen to offers.
