The Calgary Flames had many things go wrong a season ago, causing them to drop from a major Western Conference contender to missing the playoffs, but perhaps the biggest of all was the drop off in goaltending.

A Vezina finalist

During the Flames incredible 2021-22 run, Jacob Markstrom ended the season as a Vezina Trophy finalist, but a season ago, his save percentage dropped from .922 to a measly .892.
Unfortunately, despite a solid start, backup Dan Vladar didn't fare any better, but with Calgary hoping for a bounceback from Jonathan Huberdeau and their star players, this needs to change.

A third name in the group

Now, the team have a massive decision to make with back-to-back AHL Goalie of the Year and AHL MVP Dustin Wolf clearly ready to make the NHL jump, and according to Flames Insider Pat Steinberg, they will begin the year with three goalies on the roster.
This is certainly unconventional, but after a poor 2022-23 season for their top goalies while Wolf dominated the AHL, becoming the first goalie to win MVP in over two decades, he absolutely deserves a shot at the next level.
In all likelihood, by the middle of the season the team will have found their tandem to lead them forward, with Vladar the most likely to be the odd man out, but for now, the Flames are going the unconventional route.
