Wild blockbuster trade leaks involving Darnell Nurse and Morgan Rielly and it's quite the proposal

The Morgan Rielly for Darnell Nurse trade idea looks clean on a spreadsheet. The wall this deal runs into has nothing to do with cap math.

The proposal circulating online suggests Toronto sends Rielly at his $7.5 million cap hit to Edmonton in exchange for Nurse with 50 percent salary retention, bringing his number down to roughly $4.6 million.
Worth noting: both contracts run through 2030, giving each player four years remaining, not three.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported June 11 that Nurse has formally requested a trade from the Edmonton Oilers and provided management with a short list of three to five teams he would accept.

Nurse controls where this goes

Nurse holds a full no-movement clause through the end of the 2026-27 season, which means Edmonton cannot send him anywhere without his blessing.
That protection does not convert to a 10-team no-trade list until the summer of 2027, well after any deal this offseason would need to be completed.
The fan debate treats this like a straight-line transaction, but it is not that simple. If Toronto is not among Nurse's approved destinations, this trade never leaves the whiteboard, regardless of how the cap math lines up.

What Toronto actually needs under Chayka

The Leafs under John Chayka are in a full rebuild posture. Adding another aging, high-cost defenseman on a four-year commitment - one whose own fanbase already wants him gone - does not move the needle forward.
Rielly finished 2025-26 with 11 goals and 25 assists at a minus-18 across 78 games. Nurse posted 24 points at a minus-12 over 82 games, numbers that belong to a defenseman whose production has steadily declined from the contract he earned.
The cap numbers make this look like a negotiation. Nurse's no-movement clause makes it a conversation Toronto may never be invited into.

Would the Rielly-Nurse swap be a fair trade?
