Joe Pavelski confirmed his Toronto Maple Leafs coaching discussions Thursday and called the process intriguing.

The real story is what his presence in round two reveals about John Chayka.
Pavelski did not dodge the report. He confirmed multiple discussions are ongoing and that the process is one he wants to see through, which is the clearest signal yet that this is a genuine candidacy.
TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported that Pavelski is among five candidates who advanced to the second phase of Toronto's interview process.
Getting to round two is not a courtesy interview.
That is where the real question opens up.

What Chayka's willingness actually signals

The natural question is whether Pavelski can handle an NHL bench. The more revealing question is why a first-year general manager is taking a zero-experience candidate this far.
New GMs with a strong organizational vision typically prefer coaches they can build culture alongside rather than inherit a system from.
A first-time head coach carries no competing habits and no established power base.
He builds with the GM, not around him. That is not a coincidence when your GM is John Chayka.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman described Pavelski as a Martin St. Louis-style candidate, pointing to genuine player authority.
Pavelski reportedly called Tomas Hertl mid-playoffs after seeing Hertl had gone 29 games without a goal, and Hertl broke the slump immediately after.
That reach inside a dressing room is exactly what Chayka needs around Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

Why this story is bigger than Pavelski

Pavelski retired in 2024 with 476 goals, 1,068 points, and 1,332 games across 18 seasons with the San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars.
The Toronto Maple Leafs hold the first overall pick at the 2026 NHL Draft and are rebuilding from scratch.
A coach who grows with the GM is not optional here.
Joe Pavelski reaching round two is a story about control. Right now, John Chayka is holding all of it.
