The Oilers are being urged by The Hockey News to consider acquiring top Devils goalie prospect Nico Daws so that they can solidify their crease for the future.

The Edmonton Oilers have had quite the carousel of goalies, with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard manning the crease these days for the back-to-back Stanley Cup finalists.
This off-season, speculation surrounded trade and waiver candidates, with forwards and defensemen being thrown into the mix, but goaltenders always have a certain allure for Oilers fans.
Among the rumor-mongering has been Boston's Michael DiPietro and Detroit prospect Sebastian Cossa. But The Hockey News has suggested a more probable target: New Jersey Devils' young goalie Nico Daws.
"The first box Daws ticks off is his NHL experience," The Hockey News piece says. "While Cossa and DiPietro have good upside potential, Daws has played 52 NHL games to DiPietro's three and Cossa's single NHL outing. Daws has a career 2.98 goals against average (GAA), a .898 save percentage (SV%), and one shutout."

"Last season, he only played six games. In those games, he posted a 1.60 GAA, a .939 SV%, and one shutout."

Nico Daws' case is his NHL record. As Michael DiPietro struggled in three games with a 5.25 GAA and .771 SV%, and Sebastian Cossa has a lone game (2.67 GAA, .857 SV%), Daws has played 52 games with more consistent outcomes.
That experience gives him a strong edge, even if the number of samples is small. While he's contracted for $812,500 annually, Daws' New Jersey future is far from guaranteed.

The Devils Have One of the Best Goalie Tandems in the NHL, Leaving No Room for Daws

The Devils signed Jake Allen to a five-year contract this summer, and starter Jacob Markstrom has said he'd prefer to remain long-term. With one of the league's best tandems set, there isn't a lot of room for Daws to carve out a role.
That makes the time right now for Edmonton to get its turn. Goaltending depth has been a point of weakness for years, and adding a young, NHL-proven option like Daws may provide the insurance the Oilers need for another prolonged playoff run.
Ultimately, the Oilers simply cannot afford to ignore their crease any longer. If Daws is indeed available, Edmonton may not have a better chance to correct its greatest deficiency.
