The latest trade proposal from NHL insider Jesse Courville-Lynch sees the Oilers acquiring Alex DeBrincat from Detroit for Mattias Ekholm, Beau Akey, and two picks.

The Edmonton Oilers stand to make an unwanted type of history in 2025-26. If they lose to the Florida Panthers again, they will be the first team in NHL history, and in any of the four major North American professional sports leagues, to lose a title to the same team three consecutive years.

The Oilers Would Have the Best Forward Lineup in the Entire NHL After This Trade

To avoid that fate, Edmonton must roll the dice and attempt to trade for Detroit Red Wings winger Alex DeBrincat, per NHL insider Jesse Courville-Lynch, who might be one of the assets that form "the best forward lineup" in the sport.
Jesse Courville-Lynch believes the Oilers would send Mattias Ekholm, Beau Akey, and two draft picks to Detroit for Alex DeBrincat.
"The Oilers have shown they aren't scared to make big moves if it means improving their team and being able to make a deep postseason run, which was evident when they acquired Jake Walman before the 2025 Trade Deadline from the San Jose Sharks," the Hockey Writers scribe explained. "One player who stands out as a potential trade target for the Oilers is superstar forward Alex Debrincat, who has solidified himself as a star in the NHL."

"Realistically, a trade looks like the Oilers acquiring Debrincat in exchange for Mattias Ekholm, Beau Akey, their 2027 first-round pick, and their 2028 second-round pick," Courville-Lynch wrote.

"The Oilers bring in a superstar for their top-six forward group," the Hockey Writers expert continued. "They would create, arguably, the best forward lineup in recent NHL history, and likely become the favorite heading into the postseason."
The Oilers have lost back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals to Florida, and bookmakers already are looking for a third meeting. Beyond preserving dignity, Edmonton is hell-bent on its first title of the Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl era.
Since they began playing together in 2015, the duo has accounted for 758 goals and more than 2,000 points.
Leon Draisaitl led the league with 52 goals in the last season, while Connor McDavid has topped the NHL in assists four times and had 64 goals in 2022-23. The Cup remains elusive to them, however, even in their dominance.
That's where DeBrincat might fill in. The 27-year-old left winger netted 39 goals last year for Detroit, the fourth 30-goal season of his career. He's reached 41 twice with Chicago and cleared 70 points twice, too.
Drafted by the Blackhawks in 2016, the Farmington Hills, Mich., native also has commonality with McDavid, having played with him on the OHL's Erie Otters.
DeBrincat has two years left on his four-year, $31.5 million deal with Detroit, so he wouldn't be cheap. But for the Oilers, the reward could be that Holy Grail, the Stanley Cup.
