With the offseason rapidly approaching the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks have been linked to a Buffalo Sabres star forward.

Heading into the NHL offseason rumors continue to swirl regarding big moves that could be made by the Western Canadian teams.
The Vancouver Canucks are expected to be potential major players in free agency and on the trade market.
As for the Calgary Flames, they are expected to be potential sellers looking to bring in young talent and send out veterans on expiring contracts in favor of younger controllable assets.
Tonight, in an article from Matthew Fairburn and Shayna Goldman the Canucks and Flames have both been connected to JJ Peterka of the Buffalo Sabres.

Canucks And Flames Linked To JJ Peterka

In their latest piece for The Athletic, Fairburn and Goldman discussed potential landing spots for JJ Peterka.
Peterka is currently a restricted free agent for the Buffalo Sabres and has reportedly expressed his desire to move to a new team next season.
As a result, the Canucks and Flames have now been linked to the German winger.
In the case of the Canucks, the duo suggests that Peterka could be the perfect replacement for Brock Boeser in the top six.
The Canucks want to change the look of their forward group, and there's a chance they will lose Brock Boeser in free agency. That puts them on the radar for a player such as Peterka, who would give them a proven scorer for their top six. What makes them a tricky trade fit is figuring out what would come the other way.

As for the Flames, the team is in desperate need for young talent and have plenty of assets that the Buffalo Sabres could covet in a blockbuster deal.
The Flames were 30th in the NHL in five-on-five scoring last season. Their lineup needs more offensive pop, and Peterka would give them plenty of that. At 23, he also fits Calgary's rebuilding timeline. The Flames have players who would interest the Sabres: right-handed defensemen Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar and veteran winger Blake Coleman all fit what Buffalo needs. The Flames also have two first-round picks, so they have more than enough assets to pull off a Peterka trade.

While a deal involving Peterka would likely require multiple pieces the Sabres have been open about their desire for current roster players.
This type of scenario likely gives an advantage to the Flames who are a veteran team looking to get much younger.
As the offseason marches on, it will be fun to see if either the Canucks or Flames could be a finalist in the Peterka sweepstakes.
