Kris Knoblauch and Lindy Ruff now sit on a strange Buffalo timeline, just not the one some fans expected today.
Ruff's new two-year deal changes the whole read. Buffalo didn't leave the bench open; it protected stability through 2027-28.
The Sabres just posted a 50-23-9 season with 109 points and a +47 goal differential.
So this isn't a panic job. It's a succession watch.
Knoblauch, fired by Edmonton on May 14, still carries real NHL weight after a 135-77-21 run with the Oilers.
Bob Stauffer's read was direct: Knoblauch could be an NHL coach again no later than 2027-28, with Buffalo worth watching.
The clip is valuable because Stauffer doesn't sell it as a current opening; he frames it like a bench timeline coming into view.
"Kris Knoblauch, I could see him...no later than 27/28 being an NHL head coach again, I think he's going to get an opportunity, and keep an eye on Buffalo."

Buffalo makes more sense later than now
That distinction is everything. Knoblauch has reportedly been expected to step back from the current coaching carousel, which fits a longer Buffalo play better than a rushed move.
The assistant-coach route is the real wrinkle. If Knoblauch wants a softer re-entry, Buffalo could offer structure, a playoff-caliber roster, and a veteran head coach already signed.
Jarmo Kekalainen would not need to sell it as replacing Ruff. He could sell it as adding a future bench option without touching the room's current chain of command.
That is how smart clubs buy time. Ruff keeps the main voice, Knoblauch studies the roster, and the Sabres avoid a cold handoff if the job opens later.
The risk is obvious. Knoblauch may not want an assistant role after leading Edmonton deep in the playoffs.
But Buffalo is no longer a rebuild trap. It is a rising Atlantic team with pressure, talent, and a coach whose contract now creates a clean runway.
That's why Stauffer's Buffalo note lands. Not because Ruff is in trouble today. Because a year from now, Knoblauch could fit the exact moment.
