Igor Shesterkin is tied to Edmonton while former head coach Kris Knoblauch is already gone.

This is not an NHL trade. It is an online proposal.
The pitch has Edmonton getting Shesterkin from the New York Rangers, with the Oilers sending a 2028 1st, 2028 3rd, 2027 5th, Ike Howard, Beau Akey, and Tristan Jarry.
The real story is whether Edmonton should even entertain that kind of swing while the bench is unsettled.
Knoblauch was fired on May 14, 2026, and no replacement has been named. That leaves Stan Bowman staring at two problems at once: a coaching search and a roster idea built around a franchise goalie.
The clip frames the deal like a blockbuster armchair-GM swing, with Shesterkin moving cleanly into Edmonton's crease and Jarry becoming part of the outgoing package.
"Edmonton receives: Igor Shesterkin."

Oilers cannot treat this like a normal goalie upgrade

Shesterkin would change Edmonton's ceiling right away. But the cost in this proposal attacks three layers of the organization: future picks, a blue-line prospect, and a young forward asset.
Akey is not a throw-in. Edmonton drafted Beau Akey 56th overall in 2023, and his entry-level deal carries an $863,333 cap hit through 2026-2027.
The Oilers are not just buying saves in this mock deal. They are moving future flexibility for one massive answer in the crease.
Jarry's inclusion also makes this more than a prospect-and-picks package. Edmonton would be reshaping its goalie room before the next coach even sets the team's structure.
A new coach may want a tighter defensive scheme, different puck movement from the blue line, or a changed workload split.
Shesterkin is the best name in the proposal. But Edmonton's bigger question is whether one star goalie fixes a roster that just pushed its head coach out.
As an online debate, it is spicy. As an Oilers blueprint, it is a massive bet before the bench is even filled.
